From Raw Material to Finished Product: How Meritplas QA Team Controls the Quality of Specimen Transport Bags

How many quality checkpoints does a single specimen transport bag pass through before it reaches the hands of a healthcare worker?

At Merit Packaging Sdn. Bhd. (Meritplas), the answer is: continuous monitoring that begins the moment raw materials enter our facility. As a Malaysia-based manufacturer that has specialized in polyethylene packaging since 1983, our specimen transport bags are produced under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system and are FDA registered. Before any batch leaves our factory, it must pass physical performance testing, seal integrity verification, and batch sampling conducted by our internal Quality Assurance team.

Dart Drop Impact Test: Simulating Accidental Impacts During Transport

Specimen transport bags can encounter stacking, compression, or even accidental drops during logistics. To evaluate the film's ability to resist sudden impact, Meritplas' QA laboratory performs the Dart Drop Impact Test in accordance with ASTM D1709.

This standard specifies two test methods: Method A uses a 38.10 mm diameter hemispherical dart dropped from a height of 0.66 m; Method B uses a 50.80 mm diameter dart dropped from 1.52 m. The test employs the Staircase Method — based on the pass or fail result of the previous specimen, the dart weight is increased or decreased by a fixed increment to determine the weight that causes 50% of specimens to fail.

For Meritplas, the significance of this test directly mirrors clinical scenarios: specimen bags may be crushed by other cargo or slip off a cart during transport. Data from the Dart Drop Impact Test helps the QA team confirm that the thickness and formulation of the LDPE film used provide sufficient impact resistance margin under real-world logistics conditions.

Elmendorf Tear Test: Ensuring the Bag Won't "Tear at the First Pull"

Even though specimen bags are not designed to be torn open during normal use, the film's resistance to tear propagation remains a critical quality indicator — it reflects the material's toughness and durability.

Meritplas' QA team performs the Elmendorf Tear Test in accordance with ASTM D1922. This test uses a pendulum-type tear tester to measure the average force required to propagate a tear in a pre-notched plastic film specimen. Testing is conducted in both the machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (CD), with specimens conditioned at 23°C ± 2°C and

50% ± 5% RH for at least 40 hours.

Our Quality Standard Compliance with International Standard

Medical and healthcare industry reference data indicates that a qualified medical-grade sterilization bag should meet both an Elmendorf tear strength of 480 g (ASTM D1922) and a Dart Drop Impact of 160 g (ASTM D1709). Meritplas' QA team sets internal acceptance criteria based on the specific specifications of each specimen transport bag, ensuring that every batch of film meets or exceeds the specified minimum tear strength in both directions.

Internal Batch Inspection: Complete Traceability Records for Every Batch

Quality control at Meritplas does not rely on "spot checks" of finished goods. Instead, it is a systematic monitoring process that runs through the entire production flow.

Incoming raw material inspection is the first line of defense. Every batch of LDPE resin must undergo supplier certificate verification, visual inspection, and basic physical property validation before being released to production. Meritplas collaborates with internationally renowned raw material suppliers such as Petronas and ExxonMobil to ensure consistency in material quality from the source.

In-process monitoring covers key stages including film extrusion, printing, bag-making, and sealing. QA personnel draw samples from the production line at defined frequencies to perform seal integrity testing, dimensional inspection, and visual checks. Every batch is assigned a traceable batch number that links to the raw material lot number, production date, equipment parameters, and all in-process inspection records.

Finished goods release inspection includes item-by-item verification of seal strength, zipper opening and closing performance, print clarity, and biohazard symbol integrity on the finished specimen bags. Meritplas' in-house laboratory conducts tensile strength, seal strength, burst resistance, and integrity testing to ensure that every batch of specimen transport bags meets international standards.

Only after all inspection items have passed is the batch approved for release and shipment. Batches that fail inspection are quarantined and enter a non-conformance handling procedure, led by the QA team for root cause analysis and corrective action.

Quality Is Not Inspected In — It Is Built In

The QA system at Meritplas reflects a core philosophy: the safety of specimen transport bags cannot be guaranteed by final inspection alone. It must be achieved through a systematic approach encompassing raw material control, in-process monitoring, and batch traceability.

Every Meritplas specimen transport bag is the result of triple gatekeeping: Dart Drop Impact Testing, Elmendorf Tear Testing, and internal batch inspection. For hospital procurement managers and laboratory directors, this means that every shipment from Meritplas comes with a verifiable chain of quality data.
